Serotiny (banking seed for fire)
Some heath plants bank their seed for a decade or more, locked in cones or buried in the sand, until fire opens it.

Most plants are in a hurry to let their seed go: ripen it, drop it, trust the odds. A wallum banksia does the opposite. It ripens its seed, then refuses to let it go, clamping it shut inside woody grey cones and holding it there year after year, sometimes a decade or more. This is serotiny, delayed seed release — one of the coldest, cleverest tactics in the sand country. The plant is not hoarding out of caution. It is waiting for a fire.
The logic lives in the timing. For a seedling, the wallum in an ordinary year is a matted, shoulder-high tangle of established heath that will shade out and starve almost any seed dropped into it. Fire wipes that slate clean. It burns off the competing canopy and litter, returns a brief pulse of ash nutrients to sand that had barely any, and lays bare warm mineral ground. For a few months a burnt patch of wallum is the best ground a seedling will ever see: open, briefly fertilised, swept clear of the neighbours and much of the seed-eating traffic. Seed released into that window has a chance it would rarely get otherwise. Serotiny holds the plant’s whole crop ready for the moment the window opens.
Two versions of the trick run side by side in the heath, and it helps to tell them apart. The banksias practise serotiny in the strict sense. They store their seed above ground, on the plant, sealed inside woody follicles, the “mouths” studding a spent banksia cone. Those stay glued shut until the heat of a fire dries and cracks them. In Banksia aemula, the wallum banksia itself, most follicles hold their seed for years and open only when scorched. The heath’s peas and wattles reach the same end by a different road. They bank hard-coated seed down in the soil, sometimes for decades, its stony coat impervious to water until fire’s heat scarifies it, nicks it open, and the next rain floods it into life. One strategy banks in the crown, the other in the ground, but both are recruitment held in escrow against a burn.
Fire doesn’t only release seed. On this country it can also cue the flowering. The Christmas bells (Blandfordia grandiflora) that hang their red-gold trumpets over the heath bloom far more strongly after a burn, though on a lag, peaking in the second post-fire flowering season rather than the following spring. The same logic runs through the flowering. The plant times its most expensive effort to the years when the ground is briefly generous.
All of this couples the wallum’s future tightly to its fire, and there the elegance turns to fragility. A serotinous plant wagers on the interval between fires. Leave the heath too long unburnt and it grows rank, leggy and seed-poor, and old plants may die with their seed still locked in cones no fire ever came to open. Burn it too often and you spring the follicles, or scarify the soil bank, before the young plants have had the years they need to grow up and refill it, and each burn draws the bank down further than the last one replaced. Somewhere between those two failures is the rhythm the plants evolved with. Get the interval right and the country renews itself in a wash of flower a season or two after every burn. Get it wrong in either direction, and the heath quietly empties itself, one unopened cone at a time.
